Installation on Mac OS 10.6 - Snow Leopard (Intel Macs only)

  • Note: You must have administrator access on your Mac in order to properly complete the installation.

  • Once you have downloaded the package UTPPD-v1.0.1-Mac.dmg, open it and a disk image will open showing four files as shown in the screenshot of the finder window below:


  • The prefix letters a, b, c, d are for alphabetical sorting. You will be opening each of these files in turn. This particular Python distribution requires four installation steps. We will go into a bit more detail on Step 1; the following steps are similar.

Step 1:

  • Open the file a python-2.6.6-macosx10.3.dmg. This mounts a disk image "Python 2.6.6":


  • On this disk image, open the file Python.mpkg. The Install program should run, and your session will look something like this:



  • To do the standard installation: Click Continue three times, click Agree when asked to agree to the software license, be sure to select the installation location as Macintosh HD, click Install, enter your password if necessary, click OK, wait a few minutes for the installation to take place, and click Close. If you wish to change anything, read the options carefully and customize according to your needs. Eject the Python 2.6.6 disk image. You have now installed Python 2.6, which includes a standard Python 2.6 distribution, and IDLE.

Step 2:

  • Next, do the following to install VPython. Open b which will un-archive the file VPython-Mac-Py2.6-5.4 in the directory where you downloaded the UTPPD-v1.0.1-Mac.dmg file. Open the VPython-Mac-Py2.6-5.4 file and install the VPython software (the installation procedure is nearly identical to that of Python done in Step 1). You have now installed VPython.

Step 3

  • Next, open the file c, which will mount a disk image named Scipy Universal 0.8.0 containing the file scipy-0.8.0-py2.6-macosx10.6.mpkg:


  • Open this file to run the Scipy installer. (the installation procedure is nearly identical to that of Python and VPython done in Steps 1 and 2). Eject the Scipy Universal 0.8.0 disk image. You have now installed Scipy.

Step 4:

  • Lastly, open the file d, which mounts the disk image The file can be found on this disk image:


  • Open this file, run the installer in the same way as the previous three steps, and eject the disk image. You have now installed matplotlib.

  • At this point, you've installed everything you need: Python, IDLE, Numpy, Scipy, VPython, and matplotlib.
  • Now proceed to "Testing the Installation"
